Faults you feel in the fleece before you see them
The first family of defects lives in the fabric itself. Weight is the obvious one: a hoodie sold to you as 330 gsm can arrive at 290, and on a hanger you would never know. An inspector cuts a swatch from a sacrificial piece and weighs it. Question settled in a minute. Brushing is next. The soft inner face of fleece comes from a brushing process, and in the brushing room you’ll see lint drifting through the light like slow snow; uneven brushing shows up later as patchy hand feel and, after a month of wear, uneven pilling.
Pilling deserves its own test on any hoodie meant for retail. A quick abrasion check on the sleeve face, or a lab pilling test for larger programmes, predicts how the garment looks after weeks of use. Alongside it sit the classic sewing checks: stitch density on the coverseams, secure bartacks where the pocket meets the body, hood panels aligned so the seam sits centred, and drawcords with tips that stay on.
Ribbing quality decides how the hoodie ages. Cuffs and hems need enough elastane, or a tight enough knit, to recover after stretching. The squeeze test from the opening line is crude but honest, and an inspection adds a measured stretch and recovery check against the approved sample.
