Testing SPC Flooring in China: Specs, Ovens and Paperwork - Laboratory bench with test rigs, cables and instrument dials

Two SPC planks can look identical in a photo and behave nothing alike on a floor. One lies flat through five summers. The other opens a gap at the joints the first time the heating runs for a week. The difference is invisible at the point of sale, which is why this category runs on testing and paperwork more than almost any product we handle. Before you import SPC flooring from China, it’s worth knowing which tests actually predict how a floor ages, and which certificates should be sitting in your inbox before any deposit leaves your account.

Start with the spec sheet, not the sample

An SPC quote stands on a few core numbers: total thickness, wear layer thickness, plank dimensions and the underlay pad attached to the back. Wear layer is the number that decides working life, measured in fractions of a millimetre, commonly 0.3 for homes and 0.5 for commercial spaces, though every project sets its own bar. Here’s the catch. You can’t judge wear layer by eye. A plank with a thin layer looks exactly like a plank with a generous one, so the figure has to be verified, either through the factory’s own micrometer readings on cut cross sections or by a third-party lab. We ask for the cross-section measurement as a routine step. Honest plants show it without fuss.

The oven test and other predictions of old age

The test I trust most is dimensional stability. Sample planks go into a hot oven for hours, come out, and get measured for shrinkage and curl. It sounds crude. It isn’t. That oven is a fast-forward button for a conservatory in August or a floor laid over underfloor heating. In a Foshan plant the boards come off the extrusion line still warm to the touch, and the QC room stacks its samples flat under steel weights while they cool, because a plank that cools resting on its edge picks up a bow you can’t press out later. Alongside stability, the reports worth reading cover locking strength, which predicts whether joints hold when a floor gets levered together on a cold site, residual indentation from heavy furniture, and surface abrasion.

Chemistry the lab checks so your customers never have to

SPC is a vinyl product, so buyers in most markets need chemical test coverage. The usual list runs through phthalates, heavy metals and VOC emissions, and European commercial projects add fire classification on top. Which exact rules apply depends entirely on where you sell, so confirm the list with your own lab or consultant, and confirm the tariff code and duty rate with your customs broker rather than taking any factory’s word for it. What the factory should provide is recent third-party reports issued in its own legal name. A report in some other company’s name means the plant is reselling the product, which changes who actually stands behind your floor.

Reading a test report like a buyer, not a lawyer

Four things to check before accepting any report:

  • The applicant’s name matches the factory you’re paying, or the relationship is explained in writing.
  • The tested model and thickness match your order, right down to the wear layer.
  • The issue date is recent, because lines change formulation and an old report only proves the past.
  • The lab is one you can verify independently, with a report number its website confirms.

None of this takes special training. It takes twenty minutes and a suspicious mood. Reports that pass all four checks belong in the same folder as your contract, because your customers or their builders may ask for them years later.

Keep a golden plank in a sealed bag

Testing proves the recipe. It doesn’t prove that every later shipment follows it. So when a production run is approved, we keep a signed reference plank from that run, sealed and dated, half with us and half with the client. Sounds fussy. It settles arguments faster than any email chain. When a reorder arrives eighteen months later looking slightly yellower under the warehouse lights, you put the new plank against the golden one and the conversation ends in a minute, one way or the other. Colour drift between batches is the most common complaint in this category, partly because the printed film layer comes from its own supplier and film batches change. Ask the factory to reserve film from one batch for your full order, and to tell you honestly when a reorder will need a new batch, so you can decide whether to blend floors or keep batches to separate projects.

Foshan, Zhejiang and the weight problem

Production concentrates around Foshan, next door to Guangzhou, with a second cluster of flooring plants in Zhejiang further north. Foshan’s advantage for a visiting buyer is convenience. You can walk two plants and a testing lab in one day and still sleep in Guangzhou. Freight is where SPC surprises people. The stone core makes planks heavy, so containers hit their weight limit long before they look full, and the load plan matters as much as the price per box. A shipping agent in Guangzhou who handles flooring regularly will plan pallets and axle weights properly, so you’re not paying to ship air or, worse, watching a container get turned back at the gate for being overweight.

Answers for flooring buyers in a hurry

Do I need to test every single order?

No, and nobody does. The sensible pattern is full third-party testing on the first order with a new plant, spot checks on later orders, and the factory’s own in-house records for every production run. Step testing back up whenever the formulation, the thickness or the raw material supplier changes.

What’s the fastest warning sign during a factory visit?

Ask to see the QC room before the showroom. A real one holds cut cross-section samples, a working oven, calibrated micrometers and logbooks with recent dates in them. If quality lives only in a brochure, trust the brochure less. The workshop floor tells you more than the meeting room ever will.

Can the same plant make click SPC and glue-down LVT?

Often yes, since the chemistry overlaps, but the lines differ and so do the priorities. Glue-down product leans harder on dimensional stability and curl, while click SPC leans on locking strength. If you buy both, spec and test them separately instead of assuming one report covers the whole family.
